No Single Fix: Why Water Efficiency Now Needs a Combined Approach
Every summer we talk about resilience. Every summer we reach for the same handful of tools, at the same cautious pace, while demand spikes get sharper. This summer's heatwaves and hosepipe bans weren't an anomaly - they're the new baseline. The old playbook, one big intervention rolled out over years, isn't built for that pace. What's needed is a portfolio approach: multiple techniques, deployed together, as fast as the network can absorb them.
That means combining the low-tech with the sophisticated. Leakage reduction is essential groundwork - ageing mains lose water before it reaches a customer, and no downstream technology fixes a network losing supply upstream. But mains renewal takes years to roll out at scale. It can't be the only lever pulled this summer, or next.
Alongside that long-term work, retrofit flow regulation shows how much can be achieved fast. Devices like LoFlo, fitted at the meter point during routine exchanges, are already delivering measurable per capita consumption reductions across live networks — no excavation, no separate site visits, minimal disruption to customers already stretched thin by restrictions.
The lesson from this summer isn't that one technique will save us. It's that water companies need low-tech and high-tech working in parallel - patient infrastructure renewal alongside fast, scalable retrofit - if PCC targets are going to mean anything under real climate pressure.
None of this is a technology problem. The tools already exist, proven in live networks. It's apace problem - and pace is a choice made procurement cycle by procurement cycle. The question isn't whether your network needs a combined approach. It's why it isn't running one yet?
