CEO BLOG - AMP 8: A Defining Moment for the Water Sector

We’re already halfway through Year One of AMP 8, and the landscape is shifting fast. A Government White Paper on sector reform is imminent, climate impacts are intensifying, metering and monitoring are expanding rapidly, a new regulator is being planned, and our ageing infrastructure is under growing strain.

This is more than a busy period — it’s a turning point. The sector must act with vision, urgency and collaboration if we’re to navigate what lies ahead.

Reform with Purpose

The upcoming White Paper has the potential to reshape how the sector operates. But reform can’t just focus on structure; it must drive real outcomes for customers, communities and the environment. That means aligning governance, investment and innovation behind shared long-term goals — not short-term box ticking.

Climate Change and Data Transformation

Climate change isn’t a future risk — it’s here now, bringing hotter, drier summers and heavier floods. The rapid growth of metering and real-time monitoring is a powerful response, offering the potential to transform operations and customer engagement. But technology alone isn’t enough; the sector needs a cultural shift towards data-driven thinking.

Tools That Drive Progress

Our Report Card gives the sector a clear, honest view of where progress is being made and where gaps remain. It’s a shared evidence base that supports smarter decisions across utilities, regulators and innovators.

Our Water Dragons initiative turns bright ideas into practical solutions, connecting innovators directly with industry leaders to accelerate change.

A Shared Vision for the Future

The sector urgently needs a bold, unifying vision to guide reform, innovation and investment. It must be integrated, innovative, collaborative and future-focused.

AMP 8 isn’t just another regulatory cycle — it’s a pivotal moment.
