What’s next in the UK water sector

Following Ofwat’s consultation between May-June 2020, Ofwat has unveiled details of how it will design and implement its innovation fund using two types of annual competition.

United Utilities has launched its third Innovation Lab, inviting innovative businesses to collaborate on key challenges in the water sector. The programme offers support and access to experts to help develop solutions that enhance customer service and operational performance.

The Energy & Utilities Skills Partnership has launched an apprenticeship Pledge to maintain and enhance apprenticeship opportunities in the utility sector amidst economic challenges. This initiative aims to support young people and address skills shortages.

Future Water hosted its second Water Dragons heat of 2020 on 30th July, showcasing four innovative solutions. Qinov8 won first place for their leak prevention device, with strong performances from all participants.

The Future Water Association hosted a session discussing the 2050 Water Innovation Strategy, which aims to guide investment and collaboration in the UK water sector. Key topics included the role of the supply chain and plans for a Centre of Excellence.

Severn Trent has successfully implemented ABB's Active Voltage Conditioners at its Melbourne water treatment works to enhance power stability and ensure continuous water supply. Following positive results, the utility has ordered additional units for another site.
