The Future Water Zone

The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people in the UK. At The Big Bang Fair you will find an award-winning combination of shows, interactive workshops, exhibits and careers information from STEM based companies and professionals.

On 13th – 16th March 2019 as part of their Young Water Dragons initiative, Future Water Association, in conjunction with Anglian Water, hosted the first ever Big Bang Future Water Zone. Anglian Water Services and their Alliance Partners (the @One Alliance) very generously provided the personnel and expertise to run the Zone activities and engage with the Fair’s many excited visitors.

The Future Water Zone consisted of four interactive areas:

  • Virtual Reality Excavator (an excavation training tool used to train site operatives)
  • Virtual Reality Asset Simulator (an asset maintaining & traffic safety training tool)
  • Pipe Connectivity Challenge – those who completed the connection challenge in the quickest time each day won an iPad
  • All About Water Quiz – those with the correct answers to questions about water one a prize.

It is estimated that over 9,000 young people visited the Future Water Zone during the three-day event. The Zone enabled Fair visitors to experience some of the new technologies being used in the water industry, as well as highlighting how working in water is not just about the physical and dirty work taking place in trenches and treatment plants.

The objective of the Zone was to sow the seeds of interest in young minds about the many challenging and rewarding careers existing in the water sector, whilst also attempting to build ‘a pipeline of skills’ for the future, with young talent visiting The Big Bang this year not becoming apprentices or graduates, until 2022 or beyond.

Future Water Association would like to thank Anglian Water Services and their Alliance Partners for their involvement in creating the Future Water Zone. Without their time, enthusiasm and commitment this perfect opportunity to attract bright young talent to the sector would have been lost!
