RPS: How have we enabled carbon savings for Southern Water customers?

About the programme: Carbon savings captured in a water saving programme collaboratively delivered in partnership with Southern Water.

Calculations are based on reports Aqualogic have created utilizing industry standard benchmarking.

A wide variety of products are fitted to Southern Water customer’s homes by Aqualogic that assist with water savings that in turn generate CO2 reductions. Examples of products include water efficient shower heads; cistern displacement devices and low flow tap aerators.

For 2022 there was a monthly average water saving of 14.67m3 with a total of 273.89kg and 8.48% of carbon savings*. This equates to the same amount of CO2 that 12 mature trees absorb for a whole year. The same amount of CO2 can power an average home in the UK for one month as well. This, in turn, will also reduce Southern Water’s carbon footprint as saving water then means reducing the energy used to treat the water.

Osama Hamouda, Southern Water Carbon Analyst, says “Congratulations to the water efficiency team for their outstanding work. Your efforts in reducing Southern Water carbon emissions are truly appreciated.”

The contract customer services score ratings are impressive being consistently around 99%. In addition to this, vulnerable customers or those struggling with their bills are also assisted at a home visit by providing priority services information or referring for priority services assistance to help in this cost-of-living crisis. Basic maintenance work is also provided free of charge, for example, fixing a leaking tap or toilet, where possible during the home visit.

*Based on 0.000404kg of carbon generated for every litre of cold water used and 0.00993kg of carbon generated for every litre of hot water used. 70% of water used is hot and 30% cold. The carbon savings highlighted exclude toilet usages.
