PMP Utilities Provides Rope Access Solution For Gouthwaite Dam

Rope access solution deployed for maintenance activities on dam wall in North Yorkshire

14 November 2018

PMP Utilities (‘PMP’), a leading provider of asset refurbishment, renewal and repair services in hazardous, challenging environments, was recently appointed to undertake maintenance activities on the Gouthwaite dam wall, as a new spillway was being built for the reservoir.

PMP, a part of M group Services, was tasked with clearing away vegetation that, if left, could ultimately have compromised the pointing and stone blocks that make up the wall.

Due to access issues, rope access was the chosen access method and a three man team, comprised of two Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) operatives and a Level 3 IRATA supervisor, was deployed to both rig and supervise the rope operation. A PMP welfare van was also on site at the point of works.

Yorkshire Water Project Manager Mark Braody comments: “PMP worked efficiently and safely to complete the roped access works to remove woody vegetation from the face of Gouthwaite dam. The team responded well to health and safety challenges on the proposed temporary works and ensured they were delivered safely, following industry standards.”

PMP SHE Manager Adrian Nicholls adds: ‘The team worked extremely well together and completed the task safely, professionally and within the allocated timeframe.’

About the Reservoir
Gouthwaite Reservoir is in Nidderdale in the Yorkshire Dales. It was completed in 1900 with a primary purpose of supplying the mills downstream but is now a compensation reservoir that maintains the flow of the River Nidd during periods of dry weather.

At the head of the same valley, Angram and Scar House reservoirs supply water to Bradford via the Nidd aqueduct which runs through the valley and down in to Bradford. This is a 33 mile structure completed in 1899 and the route is entirely fed by gravity and the use of syphons. PMP has also previously worked within this structure and also supplied confined space rescue cover during inspections works at Angram and Scar House.
