Conference Workshop – Carbon Reduction in the Pipeline Industry – A Holistic View

8th June 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Utilities Panel of the Pipeline Industries Guild would like to welcome you to hear the industry experts and take part in an interactive workshop to develop an action plan to reduce the pipeline industries carbon contribution – now and in the future.

The relentless increase in global CO2 emissions from human activities is affecting climate change which, in all likelihood, will irreversibly worsen the environment that we take for granted. Global temperatures are rising, and it is highly likely that, if unchecked, they will reach a point where mankind will lose any effective control over the eventual outcome. However, it is considered that, right now, it may not be too late to change the way we behave and arrest the rate of climate change.

It is vital that every human being on this planet considers the effect their current behaviours have on the environment. So, what can we do?

Humans work most effectively in organised groups, so in particular, what can we do in our pipeline industry to reduce our carbon emissions?

Following on from the successful ‘Why Build in Leakage’ workshop last year we are planning to hold a similar styled event this year for promoting carbon reduction in the pipeline industry. The overriding aim is to stimulate lasting change and for everyone attending to think and act differently about the effect their actions have on the environment and climate change and to influence others to do the same.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • James Harrison, Director of London Network, Cadent
  • Alex Gray, Head of Operational Technology, Thames Water
  • David Riley, Head of Carbon Neutrality, Anglian Water
  • Lara Young, Group Carbon Manager, Costain

More speakers to be announced.

This will be followed by open discussion on how we can make a difference, where delegates will discuss actions and develop personnel pledges to carry forward

The personal pledges could be structured into:

  • Strategy (need, WLC whole life carbon as well as cost, offsetting, programme, risk)
  • Design (recycled materials, design life, appropriate standards and specification)
  • Supply (materials, transport, innovation)
  • Construction (prefab off site, efficiency, less waste, reuse)
  • Operation (operating costs, materials)
