Wheatley Solutions - The Effect of Water Deregulation on SME Businesses

A survey by Wheatley has revealed 42% of SMEs are unaware of the water market’s deregulation. And just 2% have already switched water supplier. 
Simon Murray, Water Solutions Manager at Wheatley said “It is clear that more needs to be done to raise awareness and promote the benefits of switching to SMEs – especially as they make up over 99% of all businesses!”
He continued “The results indicate that the primary driver for switching is price, which matches customer behaviour in the wider energy sector. 58% of respondents would be willing to change suppliers to someone they have never heard of before, if the price was right.” 
The data also shows that customer service is important for future customer retention, with interest from businesses in alternative tariffing and other value added services that support and encourage efficient usage to deliver sustainable savings, i.e. 47% of SMEs would use recycled water. 
Wheatley, the UK’s most experienced supplier of software solutions for managing data flows, market messaging and metering assets in the utilities sector, polled 500 SMEs across the UK in the first survey of SMEs since the water deregulation.
